Flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver following her death

NEW JERSEY – Governor Phil Murphy has ordered that U.S. and New Jersey flags fly at half-staff at all state buildings and facilities from Friday, August 4 through Monday, September 4, in recognition and remembrance of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, who tragically passed away on August 1.

“Asking Sheila Oliver to be my running mate and partner in government was the best decision I ever made,” Murphy said. “While Lieutenant Governor Oliver’s passing leaves a void in our state that can never truly be filled, she leaves behind a model of public service and integrity that serves as a template for us all. Tammy and I, and our children, are heartbroken, and our deepest sympathies and prayers remain with the Oliver family and all who knew and loved her. I am ordering our flags to fly at half-staff for the next month as all of New Jersey mourns her loss together. History will remember Lieutenant Governor Oliver as a trailblazer and an icon, and her memory and dedicated service to the people of our state will be an inspiration forever.”

The official New Jersey State Funeral and Memorial Service for Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on Saturday, August 12. Members of the public are invited to attend to pay their respects.

Prior to the funeral, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver will lie in state in the Rotunda of the State Capitol and at the Essex County Courthouse. These viewings will be open to the public.

“Together, we will honor and celebrate her remarkable contributions to the state she loved,” Murphy said.
