1 dead, 2 injured after head-on crash in Sparta Township

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – One person died and another two were injured in a head-on motor vehicle crash on Newton-Sparta Road Tuesday morning, Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John Lamon said.

The crash happened on Newton-Sparta Road, 200 yards west of Pinkneyville Rd, at 7:00 a.m., Lamon said.

Ena Cordero, 62, of Newton, NJ, was travelling west on Newton-Sparta Rd in a black 2013 Honda Civic when a white 2015 Nissan Altima, driven by Sean Hubbard, 33, of Andover, NJ, crossed over the double yellow lines from the eastbound lane and struck Cordero’s car head-on, Lamon said.

The crash resulted in extreme damage to both vehicles, Lamon said.

Hubbard suffered hip and leg injuries. He was flown to by Atlantic Air 1 to Morristown Medical Center, Lamon said.

Megan Miguel, 25 of Wharton, NJ, was a front seat passenger in Hubbard’s vehicle and she suffered superficial injuries and was transported to Newton Medical Center, Lamon said.

Cordero suffered blunt force trauma and CPR was initiated at the scene by Sparta police. She was transported to Newton Medical Center and later succumbed to her injuries, Lamon said.

Sparta Police, Sparta Detectives and a Sparta Accident Reconstructionist are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
