Hackettstown man steals cash register in Washington Twp., crashes in Mt Olive Twp.

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Hackettstown man is charged with possession of stolen property after he allegedly stole a cash register from a Washington Twp, Morris County paint store.

At 11:30 a.m. on July 30, township police responded to the area of Route 46 near the TD Bank for the report of suspicious activity. The officers were advised that a male was behind the bank in a black sedan, and was seen tossing an item from the vehicle. He then exited the vehicle and attempted to cover the license plates, police said.

As an officer was traveling along Route 46, the officer observed a black sedan traveling east at a high rate of speed and made an abrupt turn onto Joy Drive. The vehicle missed the turn, and crashed into the woods at the bottom of a small ravine, police said.

Officers were able to remove the male from the vehicle, and after a brief struggle place him under arrest. He was identified as Dirk M. Cuesta of Hackettstown, NJ, police said.

Through the course of the investigation it was determined that Cuesta had committed the theft of a cash register from the Sherwin Williams Paint Store, located at 35 Route 46, in Washington Twp. He then fled to the area of TD Bank, where he tossed the cash register, then continued until he crashed at Joy Drive.

It was further determined that Cuesta had ingested an unknown number of pills, and needed medical attention as a result. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment, police said.

On August 3, 2017, Cuesta was being released from the hospital. He was transferred to the Morris County Correctional Facility, where he was charged with possession of stolen property, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, under the influence of CDS, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane, police said.

According to Washington Township Police, At 11:25 a.m., township police responded to Sherwin-Williams Paint store on Route 46 for a report of a theft of a cash register. Upon arrival the officer was advised by a store employee that the alleged suspect left the store and fled the scene in a black four-door sedan. The store employee also advised the suspect attempted to cover the rear license plate with a towel; however it fell off as he drove away.

The license plates information was passed on to other jurisdictions in an attempt to locate the vehicle and the subject. A short time later Mt. Olive Police Department came in contact with this vehicle that had been involved in a motor vehicle crash on Joy Drive, police said.

A subsequent investigation by detectives, found that the vehicle Cuesta was operating was stolen early in the day in Belvidere, NJ and a total value stolen from the store was $440.00, police said.

Cuesta was charged with receiving stolen property, theft, hindering apprehension and criminal mischief.

Cuesta was lodged in Morris County Correctional Facility.
