Authorities Announce Murder Charges Against a Man Who Killed His Brothers Family

Colts Neck, NJ (Monmouth County) – Authorities announce murder charges against a man who killed his brother’s family, and set their house on fire, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni.

(Paul Caneiro – Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office)

Paul Caneiro, 51, of Ocean Township, was charged with four counts of murder, one count of possession of a firearm, and one count of possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

Caneiro was previously charged in connection with November 20 arson fire at his residence on Tilton Avenue in Ocean Township at 5:01 a.m.

Around 12:30 p.m. November 20th, firefighters were alerted to a fire at 15 Willow Brook Road in Colt’s Neck called in by a nearby landscaper. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home engulfed in flames, Keith Caneiro was found lying in the yard. Firefighting efforts began, and fire crews found Jennifer, Jessy, and Sophia severely burned inside of the home.

According to Gramiccioni, Keith Caneiro was found lying in the front lawn with multiple gunshot wounds. Jennifer Caneiro was found shot and stabbed, along with the two children Jessy, and Sophia with multiple stab wounds.

The prosecutor laid out a timeline of the events. It is believed that the defendant went to Keith Caneiros house early Tuesday morning and committed the murders. Then it is believed that he set the fire in the basement of the Colt’s Neck mansion. He then retrieved critical evidence of the crime and brought that back to his Ocean Township home where he set his own house on fire along with the evidence. “This was done to create an illusion that the entire family was targeted,” Gramiccioni said.

When asked about a possible motive, the presumption at this time is for financial reasons regardging the involvement in 2 businesses owned by the brothers. However, the financial aspect of the investigations will take some time.

A court hearing is scheduled for Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Gramiccioni says “this is the most heinous case their investigators have ever seen and investigated.”

The prosecutor said this type of case requires a true team effort and applauds all agencies involved.

According to a LinkedIn Profile, Keith Caneiro was the Founder, CEO, and Chief Technology Officer of Square One located in Asbury Park.

According to Colts Neck Acting Chief Frank Leccese, he was not aware of any police activity at the address in the past.

The Prosecutors Office along with the Colts Neck Police Department is urging anyone with information to report it immediately to 1-800-533-7443.
