At around 10:22 p.m., an officer stopped Richard Clarke’s vehicle on Route 517 near Route 523 for not having the license plate light illuminated, police said.

During the conversation with Clarke, the officer noticed smoke coming out of the vehicle’s engine compartment. The officer then had Clarke exit his car, police said.

The Oldwick Fire Company responded and extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported, police said.
