Car crash leads to drug arrest in Newton

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A single-car crash led to the driver being arrested on drug charges Monday morning.

Samantha Benson, 30, of Stillwater was charged with third-degree possession of controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hypodermic syringes, careless driving, controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and failure to maintain lane.

At 9:16 a.m., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident with a telephone pole down on Route 206 in the area of Tuscany Bistro, Newton Police Lieutenant Robert Osborn said.

Through a police investigation it was determined that Benson was operating the vehicle and became distracted after dropping a lit cigarette, Osborn said.

During the course of the investigation, an officer allegedly observed needles, drug paraphernalia and several full and empty bags of suspected heroin inside of her purse, Osborn said.

Benson was not injured in the crash and the pole was replaced by Century Link.

Benson was lodged in the Sussex County Jail.
