Flemington man killed in Route 22 crash in Readington Twp.

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A Flemington Borough man died Tuesday morning after his car crashed into a trailer on Route 22 in Readington Township

At around 11:31 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 22 westbound at the intersection of County Line road, police said.

Through a preliminary police investigation, it was revealed that a dump truck, owned by Flats and Curbs Concrete of Union, NJ, attempted to back into a construction site while in the westbound lanes. At the same time, a Hyundai Sonata operated by Russell P. Balunis, 78, was travelling west and struck the trailer, police said.

Balunis was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Route 22 was closed for approximately four hours and has since been reopened, police said.

Assisting at the scene was Whitehouse Fire and Rescue, East Whitehouse Fire and EMS 1.

“We would like to send our condolences to the Balunis family,” police said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Readington Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Analysis Collision Team.
