Lake Hopatcong drawdown to begin in September

LAKE HOPATCONG, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is advising all Lake Hopatcong users and lakeside residents that it will begin its 60-inch drawdown, done every five years, starting on or about Sept. 22.

The lake lowering, done to allow repairs to be made to docks and seawalls, is expected to be achieved fully by Nov. 1.

Residents who use the public boat launch at Hopatcong State Park or any public launch access points on the lake should make sure to keep up-to-date on lake levels. If you have questions regarding the drawdown, please contact the state park office at 973-398-7010.

During the drawdown, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is urging lakefront owners to install new or replace worn B-Safe dock address numbers. The B-SAFE Dock Numbering Program was developed with the aim of improving emergency response times and safety on Lake Hopatcong.

Each lakefront property has been assigned a unique dock number, or “lake address,” which is linked to its 9-1-1 street address. Lakefront property owners may voluntarily purchase and post a B-SAFE dock number sign where it can be easily seen from the water.

If an emergency occurs, an accurate location can be reported using the nearest dock number as a reference point.

The weatherproof aluminum signs measure 8” x 16” and are blue with white reflective numbers. The signs do not contain any personal information. Simply mount your sign using the pre-drilled holes and supplied rust-free screws to your dock, boathouse, post or tree.

More than 680 lakefront homeowners have participated in the program in its first two years. It’s not too late to be part of this important safety initiative, according to the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, which has made it convenient to purchase your B-SAFE Dock Sign HERE for $27 (which covers the cost of printing the sign as well as shipping and handling).
