Man charged in connection with car burglaries in Newton

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man has been charged in connection with car burglaries in Newton, according to Newton Police Lieutenant Robert Osborn.

Hasdrede Kengne, 20, of Newton was charged on Thursday with 8 counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal attempt burglary, third-degree criminal mischief and 4 counts theft of moveable property.

It’s alleged that Kengne committed numerous car burglaries during the overnight hours on August 28 and August 29, Osborn said,

The thefts occurred mostly in the area of Madison Street, Halsted Street, Lawnwood Avenue, Spring Street and Main Street. Various items were taken including cash, sunglasses and credit cards, Osborn said.

The majority of the stolen items were recovered and returned to their rightful owners, Osborn said.

Kengne was released pending an October 3 appearance in Sussex County Superior Court.

Police are reminding residents to remain vigilant, lock their car doors, remove valuable items or keep them out of sight and report any suspicious persons or activity observed.
