Police find intoxicated man attempting to light cigarette inside his home that was on fire

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – An alleged intoxicated man who police found attempting to light a cigarette inside his trailer home that was on fire suffered smoke inhalation Wednesday, police said.

At around 10:35 p.m., police and firefighters responded to the Park Place Trailer Park for a report of a fire inside a trailer with an unconscious male inside, police said.

When police arrived, they found the trailer with heavy smoke inside, police said.

Once inside, police found a 33-year-old man attempting to light a cigarette. The officer asked the man to come outside with him and the man refused. The officer attempted to escort the man outside for the man’s own safety and to allow the fire department inside at which time the man began to fight with the officer. The man was handcuffed and brought out of his trailer by force, police said.

The man had symptoms of smoke inhalation and alcohol intoxication. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Firefighters extinguished a smoldering fire in the bedroom and ventilated the trailer from the heavy smoke condition, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the man may have caught his pants and a towel on fire, police said.
