Social media tips lead to the ID of shoplifting suspect

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The New Jersey State Police have made an arrest in a shoplifting case thanks to tips received from residents who saw the case on social media.

Detectives from the Sussex Station detectives identified and charged Brandon Russ, 34, of Allentown, PA for allegedly stealing $900 worth of electronics from a Walmart in Hampton Township on August 14, state police said.

“On August 30, we sought the public’s assistance with this investigation. Within hours of posting to our social media sites, your tips assisted our detectives with identifying Russ as the suspect,” state police said.

Investigators then discovered that Russ was lodged at the Somerset County Jail for unrelated charges, state police said.

Russ was charged on September 11 with shoplifting and is currently awaiting a bail hearing, state police said.
