Suspected drunken driver strikes mailbox, telephone pole, parked vehicle in Sparta Twp.

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A 24-year-old Sparta woman was driving drunk when she struck a mailbox, a telephone pole and a parked vehicle Wednesday night, according to Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John Lamon.

Kasey Smith was charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right, careless driving and DWI.

At around 11:00 p.m., police responded to West Mountain Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident, Lamon said.

When officers arrived on scene and they observed a blue Chevy sedan disabled in the eastbound lane of the road, Lamon said.

Police determine that the vehicle had left the road, driven up a grass shoulder, striking a mailbox, telephone pole and a parked vehicle before coming to rest in the roadway, Lamon said.

Upon approaching the vehicle and speaking with Smith, who was the driver, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from within the vehicle. When asked about the odor, she allegedly stated that she had two beers at a friend’s house, Lamon said.

Smith was placed under arrest for and transported to the Sparta Police Station, Lamon said.

Smith was released to her father pending a mandatory court appearance.
