UPDATE: 5-year-old girl, 73-year-old woman killed after crash involving SUV and tractor-trailer in Chester

CHESTER, NJ (Morris County) – Two people were killed and a third was hurt when a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided in Chester Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened at 3:29 p.m. at the intersections of Route 206 and Furnace Road.

According to police, a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by Cheriyal Thomas, 75, of Linden, was attempting to make a left turn onto Route 206 south from Furnace Road, when it was struck by a northbound 2018 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, Kyle Westenberger, 30, of Hopatcong,police said.

First responders began to extricate the three occupants in the pathfinder. Two passengers, Mariamma Thomas, 73, and a 5-year-old girl, were later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Cheriyal Thomas was flown to Morristown Medical center for treatment, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Chester Police, the Morris County Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation section, police said.

Route 206 was closed in both directions for about five hours.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those involved in this incident,” police said.
