UPDATE: Franklin police arrest man who entered elementary school

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – Franklin Borough police have identified and arrested a 20-year-old Ogdensburg man for entering the Franklin Elementary School Monday afternoon, police said.

Alex J. Thebold was arrested on Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m. at his residence, police said.

On Monday at around 3:10 p.m., police responded to Franklin Elementary School, located at 50 Washington Ave, for a report of a suspicious person inside of the school, police said.

Surveillance footage showed Thebold had entered the school at approximately 2:30 pm. Student’s leaving the building at a side door had incidentally let the man inside the school, police said.

Thebold walked among with students and faculty for approximately thirty minutes before being noticed and left prior to police arrival. He entered multiple lavatories throughout the school for unknown reasons, police said.

Police searched the school and a detection canine was called to check for explosives. Both searches yielded negative results, police said.

The investigation revealed no apparent malicious intent and no students or faculty were harmed in any way during the incident, police said.

“All suspicious incidents are encouraged to be reported. If you see something say something – do not wait to report any suspicious activity,” police said.

Franklin Borough Police will continue to take whatever action necessary to ensure the schools within the Borough remain safe for our children and faculty. Police will continue to show a presence at the school.

Anyone who has additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Franklin Borough Police Detective Daniel Flora at or 973-827-7700 extension 237.
