On Dec. 26 at around 5:38 p.m., police responded to a reported shoplifting in progress at CVS. While officers were responding, they were advised that two suspects fled the store on foot across Route 206 and two others had left the parking lot in a dark colored SUV, police said.

An officer located a vehicle matching the description exiting a closed business on Lackawanna Drive. Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the four occupants of the vehicle. All four suspects were detained and interviewed, police said.

While speaking with the suspects, officers allegedly could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and observed suspected stolen property inside the vehicle, police said.

The manager of the CVS was interviewed and stated she observed three black males shoplifting various over the counter medications from inside the store. When the suspects attempted to leave with the merchandise, they were confronted by the employee and they dropped a black garbage bag containing approximately $1,700 in stolen property before fleeing. One of the suspects entered a dark colored SUV in the parking lot while two others ran across Route 206 towards the ShopRite Plaza, police said.

The manager was able to positively identify the three suspects from inside the store at the scene of the motor vehicle stop. All four suspects were placed under arrest and the vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant, police said.

Police applied for a search warrant the next day and it was granted. Police found inside the vehicle marijuana, drug paraphernalia and additional stolen over the counter medications valued at over $3,600.

All four were released pending court appearances.

Byram Township Police Department along with additional jurisdictions are continuing the investigation as to the possible location of related thefts. Additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.
