Additional charge filed in deadly overdose in Jefferson Twp.

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – An additional charge has been filed against a Wayne Township man in connection with a fatal drug overdose that occurred last year in Jefferson Township, according to Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp.

Norberto Rodriguez, Jr., 20, was additionally charged with first-degree strict liability for drug-induced death. He was previously charged in June 2018 with drug-related offenses stemming from this investigation.

On June 21, 2018, law enforcement responded to a report of an unresponsive male in Jefferson Township. Eric Malmberg was pronounced deceased at the scene and the investigation revealed that he was the victim of a fatal drug overdose, Knapp said.

Through a subsequent investigation, it is alleged that Rodriguez, Jr., age 20, distributed heroin/fentanyl to Malmberg in Wayne Township on or about June 18. It is further alleged that the ingestion of the heroin/fentanyl distributed by Rodriguez to Malmberg resulted in his death, Knapp said.

The crime is punishable by up to twenty years in New Jersey state prison and is subject to the eighty-five percent parole ineligibility requirements of the no early release act.

Rodriguez was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings.

If anyone has any information related to this investigation, they are encouraged to call the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office at 973-285-6200.
