Sparta Twp. officer assaulted in police station lobby

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County woman was charged after she allegedly assaulted an officer in the Sparta Township police lobby Friday afternoon, according to Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John Lamon.

Lauren Watson, 42, of Lafayette was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and being a disorderly person.

At around 4:30 p.m., two individuals were in the police lobby to exchange family property when a verbal dispute broke out between the two people, Lamon said.

Officer Jonathan Poon responded to the lobby and tried to separate the two people, Lamon said.

Watson repeatedly ignored Officer Poon’s requests to calm down and move back. She became combative and struck Officer Poon’s arm in an attempt to get to the other person in the lobby, Lamon said.

Watson was arrested and then released pending a mandatory court appearance.
