Washington Twp Morris County police officer charged in off-duty DWI crash, resisting arrest, police say

HAZELTON, P.A. (Luzerne County) – An off-duty police officer from Washington Twp, Morris County was arrested and lodged in jail Thursday after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into several vehicles, according to Hazelton Police.

William F. McCarthy III, 45, of Great Meadows, NJ was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle(s) or property, duty to give information and render aid, reckless driving and driving while DUI suspended after police received several calls saying an erratic driver was hitting parked vehicles throughout the city at 7:58 p.m. Two of the vehicles hit were being driven at the time, police said.

Hazelton Officers and the Pennsylvania State Police had to block in the silver Nissan Armada in the area of 15th and Locust Streets to get McCarthy’s vehicle to stop. The SUV had heavy front-end damage and the airbags were deployed.

According to Hazelton’s Deputy Fire Chief Brian Mandak, “The fire department and the rescue squad were not at the scene.”

McCarthy was transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility to await arraignment. According to officials, McCarthy is still lodged in the correctional facility.

Hazelton Police released that McCarthy is an officer with the Washington Township police department in Morris County, New Jersey.

The Hazelton police were also assisted by the West Hazelton Police and Butler Township Police.
