N.J. mom charged with endagering the welfare of a minor after drug paraphernalia found near toddler

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A Morris County mother was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor after officers detected the odor of marijuana and found drug paraphernalia inside an apartment.

On Friday March 17 at 11:11 a.m., an individual came to the Hopatcong Police station to report that a female and two males were smoking crystal methamphetamine and marijuana Thursday night in an apartment on Lakeside Blvd, police said in a news release today.

According to police, the individual just left the apartment and people inside were passed out with a toddler in wet diapers was next to the mother. Officers responded to the apartment and while outside the front door, the officers could immediately smell the strong odor of burnt marijuana.

The mother, who was identified as Melissa Shannon, 37, of Dover NJ, allowed the officers inside and she told them her child was not in the apartment but was with the father. When police told Shannon that someone who just left said the child was there, she showed them to a room where the child was located, police said.

Inside the apartment, police located paraphernalia that could have been used to smoke crystal Meth, but not enough to file a charge. The officers also found a glass pipe with marijuana residue, police said.

Another female in the apartment, who was identified as Katherine Cane, 31, of Hopatcong, NJ, was arrested on a $150.00 Paterson warrant. Cane posted the bail and was then released.

“Due to the extremely strong stench of burnt marijuana and that the paraphernalia was in reach of the toddler, Shannon was arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor,” police said.

A male inside the apartment, who was identified as Mark Haseltin, 37, of Rockaway, NJ, took ownership of the marijuana pipe. He was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

The child was turned over to her father, police said.

Shannon and Haseltin were released pending a court appearance.
