Suspected drunk driver hits concrete wall, flees scene on foot

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A suspected drunk driver fled the scene after hitting a concrete wall in Hackettstown early Saturday morning.

At 1:11 a.m., town police responded to the intersection of Route 517 and Cook St for a report of a motor vehicle crash, police said.

Prior to police arriving, a witness observed the driver attempt to drive away from the scene but the vehicle was stuck. The driver then exited the vehicle and fell down before walking away from the crash, police said.

A police investigation revealed that Robert Gonzalez, 35, of Hackettstown, NJ was travelling north on Route 517 in a 2013 BMW when the vehicle left the roadway, striking a curb, a street sign then a concrete wall, police said.

An officer located Gonzalez on Sharp St and as the officer was talking to him, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.

Gonzalez was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breathe testing, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, careless driving and failure to maintain lane. He was released pending a court appearance.
