1 dead, 1 injured in accident involving tractor-trailer on I-78 in Hunterdon County, state police say

UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – One person died and another was injured after a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 78 Thursday night in Hunterdon County, according to New Jersey State Police Sergeant Alejandro Goez.

The crash happened at 8:11 p.m. on Interstate 78 eastbound at milepost 12.6 in Union Township, Goez said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that an Acura RSX, driven by a 21-year-old man from Midlothian, VA   and a Mack tractor and semi-trailer, driven by Adan Loya-Rodriguez, 51, of Waynesboro, VA, were traveling eastbound on the highway and collided, Goez said.

Both vehicles then entered the center median, struck the guardrail and the tractor-trailer overturned, Goez said.

Loya-Rodriguez suffered fatal injuries. The 21-year-old suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital, Goez said.

The accident remains under investigation.
