1 dead after crash on I-80 in Morris County

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A man is dead after two vehicles crashed on Interstate 80 in Morris County Sunday afternoon. according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Philip Curry.

The crash occurred at 2:55 p.m. on I-80 eastbound at milepost 25.4 in Mount Olive Township, Curry said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a Nissan pickup truck was traveling in the left lane of I-80 east and a Mitsubishi, driven by Joseph Bahnken, 76, of Andover, was traveling in the center lane along side the Nissan, Curry said.

The Mitsubishi then entered the left lane and struck the Nissan. The Mitsubishi then ran off the roadway and struck the left guardrail, Curry said.

Bahnken suffered fatal injuries and the driver of the Nissan was not injured, Curry said.

The crash remains under investigation, Curry said.
