1 dead after fiery crash on I-78 in Hunterdon County, state police say

TEWKSBURY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A man is dead after a fiery crash on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County late Friday morning, New Jersey State Police spokesperson Trooper Charles Marchan said Saturday.

The crash occurred at 6:09 a.m. on I-78 eastbound at milepost 24.8 in Tewksbury Township.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a 2017 Chevrolet Trax SUV, driven by Anthony W. Guglielmo, 77, of Flemington, and 2015 Mercedes-Benz were traveling east on the on ramp from County Road 523 to Interstate 78 east, Marchan said.

The Chevrolet ran off the left side of the on ramp, entered the right shoulder of I-78, continued east, re-entered the on ramp and impacted the rear of the Mercedes-Benz, Marchan said.

The Chevrolet then continued in a easterly direction, traveled off the left side of the road through the center grass median, across all westbound travel lanes and down the grass embankment off the right side of I-78 west where the vehicle became fully engulfed, Marchan said.

Guglielmo was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, Marchan said.

The crash remains under investigation and no additional information was available.
