1 killed, 4 seriously injured after crash on I-287 in Somerset County
BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – A Middlesex County woman was killed and four others were seriously injured following a crash on Interstate 287 in Somerset County Tuesday night, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Philip Curry.
The crash occurred at 7:33 p.m. on Interstate 287 southbound at milepost 18.4 in Bridgewater Township, Curry said.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that an Infiniti passenger car, driven by Felipe Exposito-Sanchez, 24, of Linden and a Nissan passenger car were traveling south on I-287 in the local roadway, Curry said.
The Infiniti then traveled off the left side of the road to improperly pass the Nissan and after re-entering the roadway, the Infiniti struck the left front of the Nissan, Curry said.
After initial impact, the Infiniti traveled across the lanes, ran off the road to the right, traveled up an embankment, and struck multiple trees, Curry said.
Lissanne Reyes Mejia, 35, of Perth Amboy, a passenger in the Infiniti, suffered fatal injures. Exposito-Sanchez and three other passengers in the Infiniti suffered serious injures, Curry said.
The driver of the Nissan was not injured as a result of the crash, Curry said.
The local lanes of I-287 southbound were closed for approximately 5 hours resulting in moderate traffic congestion, Curry said.
The crash remains under investigation, Curry said.
