1 killed after 3 tractor-trailers crash on I-78 in Somerset County

BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – One person is dead after three tractor-trailers crashed on a New Jersey highway Wednesday night, according to New Jersey State Police Sergeant Alejandro Goez.

It happened around 11:31 p.m. on Interstate 78 eastbound at milepost 29.4 in Bedminster Township, Goez said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a 2013 Freightliner struck the rear of the 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer, and the Volvo struck the rear of the 2020 Freightliner, Goez said.

As a result, the 2013 Freightliner and Volvo went of the roadway. The cab of the 2013 Freightliner became fully engulfed and the driver sustained fatal injuries, Goez said.

The ID of the victim is still pending. The drivers of the other two tractor trailers did not sustain any injuries, Goez said.

The accident remains under investigation.

All lanes have been reopened.
