
2 face drug charges following traffic stop in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A traffic stop Tuesday led to the arrest of two Morris County residents on drug charges in Byram Township.
On Sept. 26, an officer observed a vehicle fail to maintain its lane while driving on Route 206. The officer stopped the vehicle, and the officer felt that the driver, who was identified as Jesse S. Maka, 26, of Mine Hill Township, was intoxicated, police said.
Maka performed several field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested and a subsequent search of his vehicle produced a quantity of psilocybin mushrooms, cocaine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, who was identified as Briam E. Rodriguez, 20, of Dover was then also arrested, police said.
Maka was charged with possession of cocaine, conspiracy to commit distribution of psilocybin mushrooms, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath tests, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right, failure to possess an insurance card, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, and unsealed cannabis container in a motor vehicle.
Rodriguez was charged with possession with intent to distribute psilocybin mushrooms, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, conspiracy to commit distribution of psilocybin mushrooms, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unsealed cannabis container in a motor vehicle.
Both were released pending a court appearance, police said.
