2 kids, adult taken to hospital after falling out of canoe into Sussex County lake

SANDYSTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Two kids and an adult were taken to the hospital after falling out of a canoe and into Kittatinny Lake Saturday afternoon.

According to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Trooper Troy McNair, troopers responded at 3:55 p.m. to a search and rescue incident in reference to an adult and two kids who fell off a canoe into the water along East Shore Trail in Sandyston Township.

Fire crews arrived and deployed ice rescue equipment off of the shore line. While crews were attempting to make their way across the partly frozen lake, a Franklin Township Fire Department and Sandyston Township Fire Department firefighter, as well New Jersey State Police troopers, found several nearby boats to utilize and began making their way to the individuals in the water, according to a post on the Frankford Township Fire Department Facebook page.

A short time after the boats were put in the water, and crews were successfully able to get two patients into their boat, while New Jersey State Police were able to get the other patient into their boat, and began returning to the shoreline, the post said.

The three individuals were transported to an area hospital for further evaluation, McNair said.

No additional information was available, McNair said.
