5 ATV riders charged in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Five ATV riders were charged following a report of them being on the railroad tracks behind a development in Byram Township, according to police.

On Feb. 18, at around 10:00 p.m., police responded to a report of ATVs on the railroad tracks that run behind Winding Way in the Forest Lakes section of the township, police said.

When officers arrived, a group of ATVs allegedly fled and one of them almost struck an officer who was on foot, police said.

Some of the ATV riders remained on scene and other members of the group were later located at various locations throughout the township, police said.

Zachary P. Tanis was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction of law, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension, trespassing, unregistered ATV and driving an ATV on the roadway.

Carlos J. Calvo, Anthony J. Coston, Joshua G. Coston, and Benjamin A. Intili were each charged with obstruction of law.

All five were released pending court appearances.
