Authorities investigating vandalism to church sign in Morris County
MORRISTOWN, NJ (Morris County) – Authorities are investigating vandalism to the sign of Church of the Redeemer, located at 36 South Street, in Morristown, according to Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll.
A member of the church observed damage to the sign on the morning of May 20. The sign was located in close proximity to a series of rainbow flags, set up outside of the church the evening prior, Carroll said.
“The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office will determine if this is a bias-based incident. The investigation is active and ongoing,” Carroll said.
The Morristown Police Department and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office met with Rev. Cynthia Black, Rector from the Church of the Redeemer, on May 23 to discuss the investigation, and proactive measures to reassure parishioners, Carroll said.
“It is unfortunate that someone would damage the sign of a church whose congregation has done so much for this community. Our office intends to fully investigate whether or not this was an act of bias conduct. I thank Chief Richardson and Rev. Black for meeting with my office. Law enforcement wants to send the strong message that we are taking this matter seriously, and that bias based conduct and vandalism will not be tolerated,” Carroll said.
