Driver charged with DWI after nearly crashing into police vehicle in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Morris County man was arrested on a DWI charge last week after nearly crashing into a police vehicle in Byram Township, according to police.
On Sunday, July 28, an officer observed a vehicle with no headlights on traveling on Route 206. The vehicle allegedly almost struck the officer’s patrol vehicle by failing to keep right, police said.
The officer stopped the vehicle and during the stop, the officer felt the driver, Levi R. Atkins, 22, of Lake Hiawatha, was intoxicated. Atkins was asked to perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said.
Atkins was arrested and transported to the police station where he consented to and failed two breath tests, police said.
Atkins was charged with driving while intoxicated, unsealed cannabis container in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to inspect, improper display of registration plates, maintenance of lamps, failure to keep right, failure to maintain lane, improper turn, no insurance, failure to possess a driver’s license, failure to possess an insurance card and failure to use lighted lamps when required.
Atkins was released pending a court apperneace.
