Driver stopped at green light lead to DWI charge
SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Belleville woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after police say she was stopped at a green light in Sparta Township.
Maria Cerino, 42, was charged with DWI, failure to keep right, and obstruction to passage of other vehicles.
On Nov. 8 at around 10:00 p.m., a township officer was travelling north on Route15 when the officer observed a white BMW stopped in the roadway at a green light at the intersection of Houses Corner Road and Route 15, police said.
The vehicle then began to travel north on Route 15 and the officer followed the vehicle before stopping it, police said.
The officer approached the driver’s side window and as the officer spoke with the driver, who was identified as Cerino, the officer allegedly detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath.
When asked about the odor, Cerino allegedly stated she had two Corona beers before leaving her house.
After Cerino performed field sobriety tests, she was placed under arrest for DWI. She was charged and released to a sober adult pending a court appearance, police said.
