Dump truck driver dies in Jefferson Twp. crash

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Morris County man died in a crash Thursday afternoon on Route 15 in Jefferson Township, according to police.

The crash happened at 2:10 p.m. on Route 15 North and Weldon Rd, at mile marker 6.9, police said. 

When officers arrived, the driver, who was later identified as Gilberto Salazar, 70, of Ledgewood, was trapped inside the vehicle and officers were able to extricate him, police said.

No other occupants were inside the dump truck, police said.

Salazar was transported to Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Jefferson Township Police Department, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

The right lane of Route 15 North and exit to Weldon Rd were closed for several hours after the crash, due to fuel on the roadway, police said.  

The Morris County Hazmat, Jefferson Township Fire Department Company #2, Jefferson Township Rescue Squad, Picatinny Arsenal Fire Department and the New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
