Home invasions, attempted car thefts occurred in 2 Morris County boroughs

MADISON BOROUGH, NJ (Morris County) – Police issued a public safety alert after home invasions and attempted car thefts occurred in Madison Borough and Chatham Brough Friday morning, according to Madison Borough Police Chief John Miscia.

On September 2, at around 4:30 a.m. Madison police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a home invasion. The person reported that two males entered the house from an unlocked door, Miscia said.

The house was armed with a burglar alarm, which ultimately scared the suspects. They fled in a dark colored SUV prior to police arriving on scene, Miscia said.

“Had there not been an alarm and/or the pet dog, which alerted the residents, the suspects likely would have searched the interior of the home creating a highly dangerous situation for the residents,” Miscia said.

This was one of two attempted vehicle thefts that occurred in Madison Borough, which further developed into a home invasion/residential burglary situations. A third incident occurred just over the town line in Chatham Borough, Miscia said.

“These incidents are a clear indication that criminals are becoming more and more brazen as our stolen vehicles are also being utilized in violent crimes in other areas of the state. These are very dangerous, weapon wielding criminals, with no regard for the value of human life,” Miscia said.

Residents are urged to please stay vigilant in the fight against motor vehicle theft by locking your car doors, removing your key fobs and garage door openers from your vehicles, locking the doors to your house, talking about it with your family, friends and neighbors and as always, if you see something, say something, Miscia said.
