Hunterdon County Commissioners recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – The Hunterdon County Commissioners Tuesday issued proclamations in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness in Hunterdon County, along with designating October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the county.
Every year approximately 400,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed, and it is currently one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of 19 years old.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Parkway Run and Walk and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is hosting a Head Shaving Event and Auction on Sunday, September 24th at the Sergeantsville Fire House, benefiting the underfunded and much needed lifesaving childhood cancer research.
Additionally, the Hunterdon County Main Branch Library will be lit up gold for the month of September, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness.
During the meeting, co-founder of Dance for the Cure, Joanne Liscovitz and her assistant, Danielle Hughes, accepted a proclamation in honor of their upcoming annual fundraiser, “Ribbons of Hope”, being held on Thursday, October 19th at the Bridgewater Marriott.
The fundraising event is geared towards raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of annual mammograms, check-ups, and self-examinations for women. For more information visit: www.danceforthecure.org.
In addition to this fundraiser, Dance for the Cure also sponsors the “Tie the Town Pink” project in Flemington, that consists of volunteers creating and delivering large pink bows to business establishments in the area. The ribbons are a visible reminder and create awareness throughout the area of the importance of mammogram screenings and early breast cancer detection.
To date, Dance for the Cure has been able to gift over $970,000 to individuals throughout Somerset, Hunterdon, and Middlesex counties while they go through their breast cancer journey.
