HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission is seeking a 2023 Action Grant, in the amount of $15,000, to offset the costs associated with the maintenance and expansion of an interactive ADA-compliant website known as, HuntHistory.Org.

Director Commissioner, Zach Rich shared, “HuntHistory.Org brings local history to life and provides a way to explore Hunterdon’s rich history through a unique and interactive mapping app. The preserving of our county’s local history and the legacy of those who have gone before and assists with helping future generations understand their heritage. This grant award is important to preserving the rich history Hunterdon County enjoys.”

Currently, 173 historic markers have been placed throughout Hunterdon County. If awarded, funds would assist in the complete review, organization, and update of approximately 40 of these markers. Visitors can access a detailed narrative beyond a few sentences on a historic marker, by simply scanning the QR code or entering the URL from the marker, which will bring you to the website.

Board of Commissioners Deputy Director Jeff Kuhl, who serves as liaison to the County’s Cultural and Heritage Commission, shared “These grant funds are valuable and would be put to immediate work, expanding and upgrading the markers associated with HuntHistory.Org. Bringing awareness and the exploration of Hunterdon’s rich history to our county, enriches the lives of our residents and helps our small businesses by bringing visitors to Hunterdon’s historic Inns and downtowns.”

Additional upgrades to HuntHistory.Org, include updating events and locations relevant to the American Revolution, which are timed to coincide with the upcoming 250th anniversary of American Independence.

The first phase of the project will last from, July 2023 through July 2024. In addition to creating revised physical signage, staff will work with the County Department of Economic Development to present the updated content through a redesigned website that will be an element of the County’s ‘Explore Hunterdon’ tourism platform.
