Hunterdon County finances receive clean audit for eighth year in a row

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – Hunterdon County’s Board of Commissioners this week received the 2022 Independent Audit that again certified county financial record keeping as “clean” for a record eighth consecutive year.

Commissioner Shaun Van Doren said, “Each year when the independent auditing firm releases its findings on county finances, we speak about the outstanding finance and accounting controls that have been put in place. This does not just happen by chance; through hard work and determination the County has made itself a model of government finance. A fact, proven out by the audit for the last eight years.”

“Careful control over where the taxpayers’ dollars are spent, is a vital component of the strategy that has helped this Board establish a freeze in the tax rate for the past five years, and no county debt since 2014. The independent audit of County finances for the last eight years has regularly found no material findings and no issues of non-compliance, determining that County records have been maintained in accordance with accounting principles and audit documents,” Van Doren said.

Commissioner Director Zach Rich said “To have an independent auditor make a determination of a clean audit one time is usually a cause for celebration. To have those findings made for the last eight years is simply beyond excellent. The finance record and conservative philosophy of this Board, and the controls that are in place to track spending, certified by the independent auditor, have helped us keep the pledge to taxpayers that tax dollars are important and must be used effectively and efficiently.”

The Commissioners thanked County CFO Andrew Bernath, and all the Department Heads and others involved in the finance, payroll, purchasing, and budgeting process for the clean audit accomplishment for the eighth year.
