Hunterdon County Sheriff Brown alerts residents about storm and flood damage repair scams
HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – Hunterdon County Sheriff Fred W. Brown is alerting residents about storm damage repair scams, including fraudulent charities that trick consumers into donating funds to fraudulent charities.
Residents should be concerned when someone shows up at their door offering to repair damage to their house or property. Each business should be researched for license, insurance, and references, Brown said.
Never give a “down payment” before work is started, and never make a final payment until the work has been completed satisfactorily, Brown said.
Also be wary of phone calls or emails offering repair services and never give out any of your personal information over the phone or computer, Brown said.
Check with the Better Business Bureau which has a “Scam Tracker” which allows people to report a fraud or scam and provides information about current investigations.
Before giving to any new charities check with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to be sure the charity is registered.
“Scammers are relentless, and being informed about how to protect yourself is the best way to avoid losing money and your personal information.,” Brown said.
Any resident suspecting a scam is urged to contact their local police department or can contact the sheriff’s office.
