Hunterdon Medical Center to implement new safety and security measures beginning Nov. 10

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon Health announced new safety and security measures that will take effect on Monday, Nov. 10, at Hunterdon Medical Center, designed to enhance protection for patients, visitors and employees.

The upgrades include the installation of weapons detection systems, a visitor and outpatient management system, and new restricted access controls between the hospital and the adjacent Doctors Office Building.

“Our goal is to provide a safe environment for everyone who comes through our doors,” Hunterdon Health said in a statement. “These security enhancements are part of our continued commitment to the well-being of our patients, visitors and staff.”

Weapons Detection System

Beginning Nov. 10, all patients, visitors and employees entering through the hospital’s main entrance will be directed by a security officer to pass through a weapons detection system. The technology is designed to detect weapons while ensuring a smooth entry experience.

The system is safe for all visitors, including those who are pregnant, have implanted medical devices or use mobility aids. Most visitors are expected to pass through without delay. If a weapon is detected, the system will alert a security officer, who will ask the visitor to remove the item and either return it to their vehicle or dispose of it in an amnesty box located outside the entrance.

The same detection system will also be installed at the Emergency Department entrance on Nov. 10.

Visitor and Outpatient Management System

Also beginning Nov. 10, all visitors and outpatients will be required to check in using a visitor management kiosk located in the hospital lobby. Visitors will follow on-screen prompts to identify their destination in the hospital. A visitor badge will be printed, showing the destination, and scanning the badge will allow entry through a turnstile system.

A similar system will be implemented at the Emergency Department to track visitors accompanying patients.

Restricted Access Between Buildings

As part of the new measures, the doors connecting Hunterdon Medical Center and the Doctors Office Building will be locked and accessible only to those with a Hunterdon Health ID badge.

All patients and visitors entering the hospital will be required to use the main entrance to Hunterdon Medical Center, while those visiting the Doctors Office Building should use its main entrance at 1100 Wescott Drive.

Hunterdon Health officials said these changes are intended to improve security while maintaining a welcoming environment for all who visit the hospital.
