I-78 westbound on-ramp from King George Road to close for yearlong detour starting Friday in Somerset County

WARREN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — The I-78 westbound on-ramp from King George Road southbound is scheduled to close for about one year beginning Friday night, Nov. 14, as part of a bridge replacement project in Warren Township, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The closure is tied to the I-78 westbound Bridge over the Tributary of Dead River replacement project, which will continue through fall 2026. The long-term detour is required to create space for construction work. The ramp from King George Road northbound to I-78 westbound will remain open throughout the project.

In addition to the ramp closure, I-78 westbound will have overnight lane closures Friday to shift traffic. The work was originally planned for Nov. 7 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, the left lane on I-78 westbound will close to allow crews to reposition construction barriers. A second lane will close later in the night so the roadway can be restriped and traffic shifted left, creating a work zone on the right shoulder. At least one westbound lane will remain open at all times. By 7 a.m. Saturday, all three lanes are expected to reopen in their new alignment.

The following detour will be in place for King George Road southbound traffic seeking I-78 westbound:

Detour:
• Take Valley Road/County Route 512 westbound
• Turn left to remain on Valley Road/CR 512
• Turn left onto Martinsville–Liberty Corner Road/CR 525
• Use the ramp to enter I-78 westbound

The $6.1 million federally funded project will replace the bridge deck and superstructure and install new guiderail. Construction will advance in stages using precast deck panels to reduce project time. NJDOT said all three I-78 westbound lanes will remain open for most of the construction period, with only intermittent nighttime and weekend lane closures.

The schedule is subject to change based on weather or other factors. Motorists can check 511nj.org for real-time traffic updates.
