Internationally renowned autism awareness advocate to return to the community
Dr. Kerry Magro’s Presentation “I Used to Be Bullied for Having Autism: Here is When it Stopped” through the Collaborative Efforts of Four Organizations
WASHINGTON, NJ (Warren County) – Autism advocate and internationally renowned speaker Dr. Kerry Magro will present “I Used to Be Bullied for Having Autism: Here is When it Stopped,” at Warren Hills High School Auditorium, at 6:30 p.m. on May 18.
“I am pleased to speak at this community again, which is made possible by the collaborative efforts of multiple organizations,” said Dr. Magro. “I presented on the topic of Defining Autism: From Nonspeaking to Professional Speaker at Warren Hills High School last year and look forward to coming back to the area again to address the audience on this new topic.”
Dr. Magro’s talk will offer a first-hand account of a young man who was bullied as he was growing up on the autism spectrum. He will share the difficulties of having autism and not being able to express and defend himself. Some causes and effects of bullying on our community and in our schools will be discussed, as well as which behaviors are considered bullying (including cyberbullying). A plan will detail seven stops involved in taking a stand against bullying will be shared that should help self-advocates, families and professionals. Time will be included for questions and discussion.
Dr. Kerry Magro (Mah-grow) Ed.D. is an award-winning autistic professional speaker, best-selling author and autism consultant to the HBO series Mrs. Fletcher that aired in Fall 2019 and the latest season of Netflix’s Emmy-Award Winning Series ‘Love on the Spectrum’ He started professional speaking 12 years ago via the National Speakers Association after he fell in love with theater as a child to help with his social and communication skills.
Today he has spoken at over 1200 events during that time include 2 TEDxTalks and a ‘Talks at Google’ presentation. In addition, Kerry is CEO & President of KFM Making A Difference, a nonprofit organization that hosts inclusion events and has provided 100 scholarships for students with autism for college and counting since 2011. In his spare time, he hosts a Facebook Page called Kerry’s Autism Journey that now has 218,000 Facebook followers where he does on-camera interviews highlighting people impacted by a diagnosis to breaking down barriers in our community. His videos he’s produced have been watched over 35 million times.
Kerry’s best-selling books Defining Autism From The Heart, and Autism and Falling in Love, I Will Light It Up Blue and his latest, Autistics on Autism have reached Amazon Best-Seller Lists for Special Needs Parenting. He is based in Hoboken, New Jersey.
MaryLouise Rowlin, Supervisor of Special Education, at Warren Hills High School, is the master of ceremonies for the event. The Arc of Warren County CEO John Whitehead and Abilities of Northwest Jersey CEO Cindy Wildermuth will briefly discuss programs offered by their organizations. Kelly Milazzo of the Greenwich Autism Alliance Foundation will introduce Dr. Magro.
