Joseph Paravecchia promoted to first assistant prosecutor for Hunterdon County

FLEMNGTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson announced the promotion of Joseph Paravecchia to First Assistant Prosecutor (FAP). FAP Paravecchia was sworn in on September 23 by the Honorable Angela Borkowski, J.S.C. at the Historic Courthouse in Flemington.

Prior to his promotion, Paravecchia was the Administrative Assistant Hunterdon County Prosecutor, during which he supervised the Grand Jury and Appellate Units, trained local law enforcement agencies, prosecuted a variety of crimes and offenses, and handled various other assignments. In his new role, he will work together with Prosecutor Robeson, manage many of the day-to-day operations of the office, supervise the entire legal staff, prosecute complex cases, and continue to train local law enforcement agencies.

Paravecchia previously served as a Senior Assistant Prosecutor at the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, during which he supervised a trial team, served on the Mercer County Homicide Task Force, and argued criminal appeals.

Paravecchia actively participates in several professional organizations. He is a past chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association‘s (NJSBA) Criminal Law Section and serves as an appointee to the NJSBA’s Legislative, Judicial Administration, Appellate Practice, and Government, Public Sector and Public Interest Lawyers Committees. He frequently serves as a panelist on criminal-law-related programs sponsored by the NJSBA and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Paravecchia currently sits on the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Model Criminal Jury Charges and previously served as Acting President and Treasurer of the Assistant Prosecutors’ Association of New Jersey. He has also appeared and argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court as amicus curiae on behalf of the County Prosecutors Association on New Jersey. He is a trustee of the Mercer County Bar Association (MCBA), a member of the Hunterdon County Bar Associations, and was selected as the MCBA’s 2020 Young Lawyer of the Year and the Hunterdon County Crime Stoppers 2022 Crime Stopper of the Year.

Paravecchia received his bachelor’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University and graduated cum laude from Ave Maria School of Law, where he served as Publication Manager of the Law Review. After law school, he clerked for the Honorable Robert C. Billmeier, J.S.C. (ret.) and the Honorable Andrew J. Smithson, J.S.C. (ret.) in the Mercer Vicinage.

Paravecchia is admitted to the Bars of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
