Man accused of driving wrong way on Route 46 in Washington Twp., Morris County charged with DWI

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Sussex County man accused of driving the wrong way on Route 46 in Washington Township now faces DWI and related charges.

On Oct.11, at around 11:07 p.m., a township officer was conducting a motor vehicle stop on Route 46 west in the area of Hackettstown Honda when the officer observed a vehicle travelling westbound on Route 46 in the eastbound lane, head-on with the oncoming traffic, police said.

The officer then terminated that stop and proceeded after the suspect’s vehicle which was being operated on a flat front tire. The vehicle was eventually stopped on Route 46 near the intersection of East Avenue, police said.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the driver, who was identified as Shawn B. Hirschel, 28, of Hamburg, was allegedly driving while intoxicated, police said.

Hirschel was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to keep right, wrong way on a one-way street, failure to submit breath samples, failure to maintain lane, failure to report a motor vehicle crash, and leaving the scene of a crash. He was released to a responsible adult pending a court appearance,
