Man arrested in Utah for sexual assault of 9-year-old girl in Somerset County
NORTH PLAINFIELD BOROUGH, NJ (Somerset County) – A Somerset County man was arrested in Utah in relation to an alleged sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl that occurred in North Plainfield Borough, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.
On Wednesday, October 19, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit was notified by North Plainfield Police Department of a 9-year-old girl who reported to be sexually assaulted by an adult, McDonald said.
The victim stated that she was sexually assaulted by Fabian Osuna-Vargas, 39, of North Plainfield Borough, earlier that day. As a result of this investigation, which was conducted by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and North Plainfield Police Department, he was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, McDonald said.
Then on Friday, October 21, it was determined that Osuna-Vargas had boarded a flight from Chicago, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah. He was then apprehended without incident in Salt Lake City by members of the Salt Lake City Police Department upon landing, McDonald said.
Osuna-Vargas subsequently waived extradition from Utah and was transported by Somerset County Prosecutor’s detectives on Friday, November 4 to New Jersey where he was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, McDonald said.
