Man charged with DWI after crashing into utility box, mailbox in Sparta Twp

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) -A Sparta Township man was charged with DWI after he allegedly crashed into a utility box and a mailbox early Sunday morning.

Shaun Tatka, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated, consumption in a motor vehicle, open container in a motor vehicle, careless driving, failure to inspect and failing to keep right.

On Dec. 15 at around 1:00 a.m., township police responded to a residence on Richmond Hill Drive for a report of a vehicle stuck on the front lawn, police said.

According to police, a blue Chevrolet Cobalt appeared to have left the roadway, striking a utility box and mailbox before coming to rest approximately 100 feet off the roadway.

The driver, who was identified as Tatka, was still sitting behind the wheel. An officer instructed him to turn off his vehicle and step out. He was administered field sobriety tests and arrested for DWI, police said.

Tatka was charged and released to a sober adult pending a court appearance.
