Man charged with DWI, leaving scene of crash in Morris County

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Sussex County man is facing a slew of charges including driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash in Denville Township.

On November 13, an officer stopped a vehicle on Interstate 80 after observing the vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign on Ford Road, police said.

During the course of the traffic stop, it was discovered that the driver, who was identified as Julio Alvarez, 27, of Sussex, had just been involved in a single-vehicle crash and left the scene, police said.

While the officer was speaking with Alvarez, officers detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath and observed an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle, police said.

Alvarez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, improper safety glass, open container of alcohol, consumption of alcohol in motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, and failure to report a motor vehicle crash. He was released pending a court appearance, police said.
