JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – An Essex County man is facing several weapon and drug charges after an incident in Jefferson Township Monday, police said.
Justin McGriff, 22, of Orange was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, second-degree unlawful possession of an assault firearm, fourth-degree possession of a prohibited weapon or device, and two counts of third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (heroin and xanax).
On May 18, township police responded to a report of an altercation between two people outside a residence on Cozy Lake Road. Responding officers were advised that one of the individuals involved, who had left the scene, was in possession of a handgun, police said.
The man, later identified as McGriff, was located and found to be carrying a handgun in his waistband, police said.
A further investigation revealed that McGriff was also in possession of an illegal assault MAC 10 firearm, an illegal extended magazine, heroin and unprescribed xanax pills, police said.
McGriff was arrested and charged. He was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court hearing on May 21, 2020.
