Man found asleep behind the wheel on a Sussex County roadway charged with DWI

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A New York man is facing several charges including driving while intoxicated after he was allegedly found sleeping behind the wheel in Sparta Township.

On Oct. 26, at around 1:27 a.m., police responded to a call for a person asleep at the wheel of a vehicle in the area of the Route 15N off-ramp to Sparta Junction, police said.

Officers located the vehicle still running and in the lane of travel at the traffic signal onto Sparta Junction from the same off-ramp, police said.

The officer approached the vehicle and observed the driver, later identified as Joshua O. Hlavacek, 27 of Bronx, asleep at the wheel of the vehicle. The officer woke Hlavacek and escorted him safely to the shoulder of Sparta Junction, police said.

While speaking with Hlavacek, the officer suspected that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages and was showing signs of impairment. In the center console of the vehicle police located a cup containing urine which Hlavacek did not know where the urine had come from and did not recall urinating in his vehicle. Also located in the vehicle were two open beer bottles, police said.

Hlavacek was asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests and upon completion of the sobriety tests, he was arrested for DWI, police said.

After completing breath testing, Hlavacek was issued summonses for DWI, open container of alcohol in MV, reckless driving, delaying traffic, failure to obey traffic control device, failure to produce M.V. registration and failure to produce M.V. insurance.

Hlavacek was released to a sober adult pending a court appearance, police said.
