Man possibly suffered medical emergency before drowning in Sussex County lake

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A man tubing on Lake Mohawk possibly suffered a medical emergency before drowning on Sunday.

According to Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John Lamon, an 80-year-old man floating on a tube off of his dock on West Shore Trail possibly suffered a medical emergency that caused him to fall into the water and not resurface.

The New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau was requested by the Sparta Police Department to assist with the search, New Jersey State Police Sergeant Philip Curry said.

The man’s body was recovered by a local resident prior to the marine bureau arriving on scene, Curry said.

His identity was not released.

“This incident is not being considered suspicious,” Curry said.
