Man Struck and Killed While Walking on the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County over the Weekend

WOODCLIFF LAKE, NJ (Bergen County) – A 30-year-old California native man was tragically struck and killed on the Garden State Parkway between mile marker 169.7, New Jersey State Police say. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Samuel E. Gottheim of Santa Clara, California, was in New Jersey this past weekend for a family wedding. Gottheim was struck by an SUV at 3 a.m. on Sunday September 15, 2019 as he walked in the northbound left lane, in Woodcliff Lake, according to State Police.

It is still unclear as to why Gottheim was walking on the parkway at this time.

According to a Facebook post, by his father, Arthur, the loss of Samuel has been devastating and “totally surreal” for their family and friends. “He was a wonderful 30-year-old man who was just starting his life. We will miss him forever,” Arthur adds.

According to his LinkedIn, Gottheim graduated from Muhlenburg College in 2011 earning a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, and went on to obtain his doctorate degree in psychology and chemistry at Rice University in 2017. His current occupations has been for Applied Materials as a process engineer.

State Police say that an investigation is ongoing.
