Morris County man charged with arson, insurance fraud

EAST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Authorities have arrested a Morris County man on charges related to a fire that occurred on Dec. 21, 2019 in East Hanover Township, according to Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp.

Gilmar Tejada, 37, of East Hanover Township was charged with second-degree aggravated arson, and two counts of third-degree insurance fraud.

The fire happened on Dec. 21, 2019 at a sing-family residence on Cedar Street, Knapp said.

The cause of the fire was allegedly determined to be incendiary. The investigation revealed that Tejada allegedly had been present on the scene in the immediate time before the fire and no other person had entered the residence, Knapp said.

A subsequent investigation revealed that insurance documents related to the property were allegedly not accurate, Knapp said.

There were no injuries as a result of this fire, Knapp said.

Tejada was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a first appearance in court.

The investigation was conducted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Arson and Environmental Crimes Unit, Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the East Hanover Township Police Department.
